Reasons why blackwashing is bad!
Read everything first, don't attack me!
OO1. It's lazy representation and black people deserve better than race-bended/blackwashed characters. It's actually offensive when you think about it.. sounds kinda like blackface. Slapping dark skin on an already existing non-black character? is that what black people are to you?OO2. Blackwashing characters because there are more white characters in the show is racist, you're changing their skin color just because there's too many of white people and you think it needs to be changed. Like for example, in japan most of their characters are japanese. So why can't they have mainly japanese characters in their stories? You wouldn't tell a story writer from ghana to add more east asian people into their stories since they're lacking diversity so why do it the other way around? Nowadays people look too much at race.. what happened to enjoying a story for the story instead of worrying about how many black people are in it?OO3. Blackwashing does not empower black people. At the end of the day the white character will still be known for it's original design, they are still white at parks. All it becomes is piggyback riding off of existing characters. If I headcannon or redesign a character as gay that doesn't make it gay representation, it's just a headcannon/redesign. It doesn't extend to the media or gay communities so it only really exists to me and whatever small audience see's it.OO4. Both blackwashing and whitewashing are the same and do the same thing: they change someone's race. Yes the history of whitewashing is horrible and isn't like blackwashing but they're both toxic. Either both should be seen as harmful, or both should be allowed.OO5. "___'s race being originally white has nothing to do with the plot or storyline so it doesn't matter" So, if a characters race is not that important to the story, then you can do whatever you want and just raceswap/blackwash them? Following this logic, same can be applied to black characters by making them white! "Oh it wasn't important. Nobody cares." You and everyone else would be upset if this happened. Please stop being hypocritical!OO6. Most of the time when blackwashing happens, it's the stereotypical "afro or braided hairstyle, listens to hip-hop and rap, has a blaccent, big lips, or big thighs and butt" Not all black people are like that. Some black people actually have straight hair, slim body with no lower curves, uses correct english and pronunciation, has average or small lips and some listen to classical music. Does that make them any less black? No. Know that black people are NOT ALL the same!OO7. This doesn't exactly link to blackwashing, this can apply to body types and more. When most people think of inclusion and diversity they think of just black people, gay people, trans people, chubbier and fatter people nd etc. They exclude the whites, skinny people, blondes, straights and males out. Inclusivity means to INCLUDE, NOT exclude. You're adding onto what once was 1 or 2 people to multiple. Include does not mean pushing the same people out, same thing goes for diverse: being composed to different elements. Variety!OO8. This is another open topic. Lot's of people only care about race & diversity when it comes to things like jobs, acting, and etc. If you needed heart surgery and there are two people who are doctors, as in one is a white straight male and the other is a gay black male. The white doctor is a certified doctor who's highly recommended, lot's of experience with multiple degrees while the black doctor isn't recommended and has little to no experience.. who would you choose? If you choose the black doctor, and only chose them because they're black and gay then that's concerning. You're choosing the sake of diversity over human life.
I, as a black girl, believe that if you want to represent black people, make a brand new, original character instead of black washing. It's 100% more empowering and is exactly what black people in the 50s and our black people during slavery would want! Not some cheap paint over, or just adding a POC actor in a movie to replace an original character for the sake of "diversity", which is really pointless because you're regurgitating the same plot and setting the movie/character had in the first place. Don't you think companies who are racist would publish such stuff instead of thinking that black people can have their own characters?Another thing I want to mention is that changing the skin color of a character for a pfp is fine, because it's for a personal reason. Though it should be okay to change the skin color of any character for that personal reason, and it shouldn't be a problem.
This is my opinion and I will not go out of my way to attack or harass anyone just because they may not agree with me, or because they blackwash. I also won't get mad if I see it, because that's silly! Same thing goes for all my other opinions! Though, I will not like to interact with such users and I do not want them to interact with me UNLESS we are having a debate (example: YouTube comments section). Even during those times I will be respectful.Once again this is my opinion, so please don't tell me "you don't know about your history" or that I'm trying to "impress white people". I just want higher quality representation because black washing is cheap and not it!
